Everybody's curious. Nobody likes to be uninformed. Sometimes though, especially when we're just beginning a new activity, we don't even know what the important questions are.
Here at Azimuth Expeditions, we get a lot of questions, and that's the way we like it. We want you to know as much as possible about sea kayaking and the program selection that we offer before you make your decisions about which class or tour is right for you. Although everybody has different concerns, there are some questions that seem to come up more than others. We've assembled a few of them here, and tried to answer them as best as we can.

Do I need to have had sea kayaking experience to go on an Azimuth paddle?
No. Our Destination Courses are designed so that anyone, regardless of kayaking experience, can participate. Although these shorter paddles are not set up to teach every aspect of sea kayaking, we do give you enough instruction about how to paddle properly that you'll be safe, comfortable and efficient on the water. We do, however, recommend that you take a Sea Kayak Foundation Class before going on any of our multi-day courses; because of the additional paddling time involved, it would be helpful for you to have had instruction in basic paddling skills.
Do the prices listed for courses include all the equipment I need, or do I have to rent anything?
There are some outfitters that charge one price for a class or tour, then charge additional fees for items like kayak or wetsuit rental, even though those items are necessary for the program to work. Our prices include everything you'll need.
What do I need to bring with me?
- Water
- A snack
- A camera (a waterproof disposable works well.)
- An extra set of clothing packed in a waterproof bag. This will go with you inside the kayak. (A drybag is preferred, but a plastic garbage bag will work.)
- Sunscreen
What should I wear?
Wear clothing that will keep you warm, even if it's wet. Polypro, fleece and wool work best. Heavy cotton items like jeans and sweatshirts are discouraged. Layering is a good option and always remember to bring along a lightweight nylon or Goretex rain jacket.
Do I get a discount if I have my own kayak?
No. We have everything you need for our courses so you don't have to feel like you need to provide anything. We do recommend, however, that you use your own kayak if you have one, especially for classes like the Rescue and Recovery and the Roll Clinic. It's good to get comfortable with new skills in the boat you'll normally be paddling.
Does it matter that I'm not a good swimmer?
Not a bit. This is kayaking, and we try very hard to emphasize the difference between being on the water and being in it. You will be wearing a Personal Flotation Device (a life vest), at all times while you're paddling, so if you should happen to take an unexpected dip, you will float. It doesn't happen often, but if it does, our instructors and trip leaders are experts at getting you quickly back in your kayak, where you belong.
When should I sign up for a course?
There's no real rule on this, and we often take registrations right up until the event is about to get underway. It does happen though, that we fill up early, so the best plan is to register as soon as you can. If you know there's a class you want to take or a particular place you want to go, sign up early to make sure you get a spot.
Can I just show up at a course and register on site?
No. We take enough gear with us to cover the number of participants that are registered for each course. If you show up without prior coordination with us, we won't have equipment for you to use.
What if I need to cancel?
Full payment is required to register for all classes and tours that are one day or less in length. This payment is refundable in full if cancellation is made at least 5 days in advance. If the cancellation is made within 5 days of the activity, no refund will be given. You may, however, transfer to another class or tour inside of 5 days for a $20 service fee. Multi-day tour cancellations receive a full refund of the deposit if the cancellation is made at least 30 days before the tour. Inside of 30 days, the deposit is forfeited. You can make arrangements with us though, if you want to transfer.
We realize that things come up and the unexpected always has a way of disrupting the best laid plans. We will work with you as much as possible to ensure that you get the sea kayaking experience you are looking for.
What kind of kayaks are available?
We use Northwest Kayaks fiberglass singles. A lot of outfitters use slow plastic boats because they're less expensive and easier to maintain. We recognize that composite boats do require more upkeep, but we believe that the additional performance and enhanced aesthetic that you experience when using a fiberglass boat is worth the extra cost. Doubles are available upon request, and we usually take a double along on our multi-day tours.
How old do you have to be to participate in a class or tour?
Our course offerings are based on participants being adults. We will take children 12 and over along on our shorter paddles, but only if accompanied by a parent. If you've got kids and you'd like to get them involved in kayaking, a custom class or tour is probably just the ticket. We can work with you to craft a paddling adventure that will maximize your child's enjoyment and fit their needs.
